Credit River Township is one of 11
Townships in Scott County. It's elected
officers are members of the Scott County
Township Officers Association. The
Township is also a member of the Minnesota
Association of Townships (MAT),
an
organization representing the 1793
townships in the State of Minnesota.
Twenty-three percent (23%) of Minnesotans
live in townships. |
 |
Townships were originally designed to
occupy 36 square miles and were 6 miles
long by 6 miles wide and hence were called
"6 x 6's". Each of these 36
square miles made up a
"section". Credit River Township
actually occupies 24 sections and is 6
miles long (north to south) and 4 miles
wide (east to west). Twelve (12) sections
were "lost" to Lakeville
and Dakota County years ago. |
 |
Townships in general are governed by at least
five elected officers, a clerk, a treasurer, and a three person Board of
Supervisors, one of whom serves as the Chairman. Altogether, Minnesota has
approximately 9,000 township officers. |
 |
Dan Casey currently serves as Board Chair
for Credit River Township assisted by Vice
Chair Leroy Schommer and Supervisor Bruce
Nilsen. Jerald R. Maas serves as Township
Clerk and Holly Batton is the Town
Treasurer. |
 |
Credit River Township also contracts with
a Township Attorney, Township Engineer,
Township Planner, Wastewater Consultant
and a Wastewater Operations firm to assist
the officials in carrying out the needed
services in the Township. See the link
entitled "Officers - Staff " in the right hand
column. |
 |
The duties of these officials are
varied, but generally common tasks include administering tax levies set by the
Town's residents, maintaining roads and
parks, and either running police, fire and rescue operations or contracting for
these services. See "Duties of Officers" on the Officers Page link in
the right hand column. as well as pages
discussing "Finances",
"Roads", "Parks"
and "Fire Protection". Police
protection in Credit River is provided by
the Scott County Sheriff. |
 |
Township officials in Minnesota are responsible for about 56,000 miles of roads
( 43
percent of the state's total ) and about 6,000 bridges. Credit River
officials are responsible for over 50 miles of roadways within the boundaries of
the Township.
